Networking & Informational Interviews
What is Networking?
Networking is the process of building relationships to explore career paths, learn about industries, and access opportunities that aren’t always posted online. It includes connecting with friends, professors, alumni, and professionals to gain insights, not just job leads.

Video Guide
Step 1: Make a Plan
- Clarify your goals: Are you exploring, seeking advice, or researching companies?
- Make a contact list: Who do you already know—friends, classmates, professors, past employers?
- Choose your approach: LinkedIn, emails, events, on-campus meetups, etc.
- Update your resume and LinkedIn profile before reaching out.
Step 2: Find Contacts
- Use LinkedIn to find UT Dallas alumni or people working in roles you are interested in.
- Attend networking events found on Handshake or through student organizations (e.g. IEEE, AMSA, etc.)
- Talk with professors—they may have valuable industry connections.
Step 3: Ask for an Informational Interview
- Keep your request short, polite, and focused on learning, not job offers.
- Be clear that you are seeking insight, not a job.
For example:
“Hi [Name], I’m a student at UTD studying [major], and I admire your path in [industry]. Would you be open to a 20-30 minute chat to share your experience?”
Step 4: Have a Great Conversation
- Prepare thoughtful questions about their career path, daily work, company culture, etc.
- Take notes and stay curious.
- Be conversational, not transactional.
- You may offer your resume to ask for feedback, not for a job referral.
Sample Questions to Ask:
- How did you get started in your field?
- What do you enjoy most about your role?
- What skills are most important in your work?
- What advice would you give to someone interested in this field?
Step 5: Maintain the Relationship
- Send a thank you message/email and make sure to mention something specific you learned from your conversation.
- Stay in touch once a month or quarterly.
- Share relevant updates or resources to keep the relationship active.
Tips to Remember
- Follow up, but don’t overwhelm your contacts.
- Show genuine interest and share your value before asking for help to build trust.
- Focus on building relationships, not quick referrals.
- Be yourself and stay professional.
